The Congress of Mexico City is currently facing a situation where it cannot present the citizen initiative regarding the prohibition of animal shows, such as bullfights, for discussion and plenary voting. This is due to the Judicial Power reviewing possible violations of human rights of workers in the bullfighting industry. The Movimiento Ciudadano deputy, Royfid Torres, expressed his discontent with this situation, mentioning that protests are justified given the number of signatures presented by animal rights activists.
Regarding the halt imposed by the Judicial Power, the coordinator of the Orange Caucus emphasized the need to combat this determination, arguing that it violates the autonomy of the Legislative Power and the authority to analyze initiatives. The Constitutional Chamber is expected to thoroughly review this decision to allow the local Congress to make decisions regarding the citizen initiative.
Jesús Sesma, coordinator of the parliamentary group of the Green Party in the Congress of Mexico City, urged deputies to define their vote regarding the proposal to prohibit animal shows. Sesma criticized the lack of clear positions by some legislators, despite self-identifying as animal rights advocates.
It is highlighted that this Tuesday, congress members have the opportunity to be part of history in the defense and protection of animals in the capital of the country by deciding on the end of mistreatment towards bulls. The session in Congress will be marked by the closure of the venue at noon, as part of the actions of animal defenders and legislators against bullfighting, who seek to pressure for a vote on the prohibition of these shows. March 11 is the deadline for Congress to discuss and decide on the initiative that seeks to prohibit bullfighting in Mexico City.
